University of Wales Trinity St Davids v Welsh Academicals

On Wednesday the 23rd of March 2016 a Welsh Academicals squad drawn from a wide selection of universities travelled to Lampeter for this fixture celebrating the 150th anniversary of rugby in Wales. The players and non-playing representatives received a warm welcome both on and off the pitch and the game was of high quality and exciting. The day was rounded off with an excellent celebration dinner at the university.

The first half saw a very bright and committed start from the home side giving the Academicals a tough time in the scrums and lineouts and frequently turning over ball at the breakdowns. UWTSD quickly established a 10 point lead through a well worked try that was converted, followed by a successful penalty kick. The Accies' side then began to get a foothold in the game and came back with a good individual try scored by scrum half Tom Morgan and an excellent try created from the visitors 22 by a clever cross field kick from full back Fraser Robinson, picked up by winger James Gahan who then fed inside to centre Amir Jiwa-Walji who scored under the posts. Both tries went unconverted to level the scores at 10 points all. The home side finished the half on top scoring an unconverted try and 2 penalties to lead 21 – 10 at the break.

The start of the second half saw multiple substitutions by the Academicals and replacement fly half Lewys Gibby had an immediate impact on the game in what proved to be a sparkling second half performance by the Welsh Academicals. The insistence on running the ball from all parts of the field and great skill in the offload meant the home side began to run out of steam and the Accies pack began to dominate in set plays as well as the loose. This allowed the backs plenty of possession to exploit. Tries came from Adam Nyhan (2), James Gahan (2), Fraser Robinson, Dan Hill, Freddie Harries, Joel Young, and a penalty try. Fly half Lewys Gibby added 7 conversions and UWTSD scored a further try to register a final score of 69 – 26 in favour of the Accies'.
