Llandovery 2016

Llandovery College V Welsh Academicals

On Wednesday 6th January a Welsh Academicals Squad drawn from a wide selection of schools and colleges travelled to Llandovery for this annual fixture. The players and non-playing representatives received a warm welcome both on and off the pitch and the game was an exciting, quality game despite the difficult playing conditions.

Very early on in the first half the Accies showed that they would stick to their principles of an open game despite the wet conditions and greasy ball by running the ball from under their own posts and making good ground. The home team came back at them and produced some slick handling among a well drilled set of backs to put the right winger over for a converted try on 6 minutes. The remainder of the first half of a game in which rolling subs had been agreed saw several changes made by the Accies as they sought their best combination and a number of opportunities that were missed. On 31 minutes the Accies, increasing in confidence, again ran a quick penalty from their own line and despite making good ground to the halfway line lost possession and from a hack through and chase the home side scored a crucial try that went unconverted for a 12 nil score at the interval.

The start of the second half saw further substitutions ensuring that all the squad had now had game time and we witnessed a more cohesive display from our side. On 43 minutes from good pressure on the ball carrier we won turn over ball that was quickly recycled to allow full back Llyr Fairburn to score an unconverted try in the corner. This was followed by a period of pressure from the Accies side which unfortunately did not yield any points and on 57 minutes we were further punished when from a penalty close to our line the home second row forward crashed over from a quick take. In the final 10 minutes the Accies started a period of intense pressure and on 62 minutes a golden try scoring opportunity was stopped by the home side hooker illegally. This led to a yellow card and a penalty from which we chose to take a scrum and created the space for replacement forward Luke Williams to go over for an unconverted try. Despite pressure being applied we were unable to add to this and Llandovery ran out winners 17 points to 10.
