Cambridge University Under 21s 21 Welsh Academicals 31

Grange Road, Cambridge, Saturday 26th October 2013.

Despite the early autumnal leaden grey sky and the threat of rain , this match provided high tempo varsity rugby in the best traditions of these two famous clubs, which was much appreciated by those spectators who had risked the elements to attend.
In a game of fluctuating fortunes, Accies, with Luke Treharne influential, effectively controlled the first half against an enthusiastic Cambridge team. Well led by Fred Gulliford and Will Meades, slick Accies teamwork and handling from set pieces and loose play allowed them to play an expansive game leading to four sparkling tries by Treharne, Robinson, Gatt and Varley and three conversions by Isaacs. Cambridge, under pressure for long periods, boosted their confidence with a clever goal almost on half time to reduce the deficit to 26 to 7 to the Accies.
Remarkably, following Half Time Replacement changes and team talks, the flow of the game changed in Cambridge`s favour as their invigorated pack took the game to the Accies forcing them into defensive mode within their half and thus limiting their try scoring ability. Continuous Cambridge pressure paid off as they scored two well constructed tries, both converted. With the score at 26 to 21 and with fifteen minutes to the final whistle, Cambridge went in full pursuit of a vital score. Alas it was not to be, as Accies, having valiantly defended in their 25, broke down the left side of the field and scored from a driving lineout to put the game out of reach of the Cambridge team to seal victory for the Accies 31 to 21.
